9 If 1 is added to the denominator of a fraction it becomes ½. If 1 is added to the numerator it becomes 1. The product of numerator and denominator of the fraction is.

1. 6
2. 10
3. 12
4. 14                                                           ssc cgl prelim exam, 24/02/2002

Solution let the fraction be x/y

If 1 is added to the denominator  the fraction becomes ½

x/y + 1= 1/2

2x = y + 1                                                          (1)

If 1 is added to the numerator the fraction becomes 1

x + 1/= 1

y + 1 = y                                                            (2)

From (1) and (2), we get

2x = x +1 +1

x = 2

Put this value in (2)

y = 3

The fraction is 2/3

The product of numerator and denominator 2×3 = 6

10 The sum of digits of a two digit number is 12. The difference of the original number and the number obtained by interchanging the digits is 18. Find the number

1. 84                       2. 66                      3. 75                        4. 93

Solution let the unit’s place  digit be x

And ten’s place digit be y

Then the number is 10 y + x

And the number obtained by interchanging the digits = 10 x + y

The sum of digits is 12

x + y = 12                                                           (1)

The difference of the original number and the number obtained by interchanging the digits is 18

10y + x – 10x – y = 18

9y – 9x = 18

y – x = 2                                                            (2)

Adding (1) and (2), we get

2y = 14

y = 7

x = 5

The number is 75
